everything through nload, etc lots of factors need to be known
overall, but my first guess would be either hd bottleneck (laptop hds are
slower - insanely so if you haven't done some hdparm tweaking) and

that, perhaps trying it on your friends computer? Offhand I can't think
of anything beyond that being your problem, unless it's some magic that
hotplug is doing for me...

Unfortunately you can't just use any old cdrom with a laptop and expect it
to boot. The bios must support talking to that device, and pcmcia cdroms
vary greatly in the methods in which they are initialized/etc. - so
