Imho you should try an Apple iBook or PowerBook. They have good displays,
leight weight and are well supported. the components are good (ati radeon
mobility, geforce 4 go, 100mbit lan, airport extreme, firewire, cdrw / dvd rw).
but the PowerBooks are a bit expensive.

i've git some serious problems with my matshita dvd/cdrw combo drive in my acer
travelmate 225xc.
the cd/cdrw part works properly, but everytime i want to watch/load a dvd with
mplayer, i get an error like:
couldn't open dvd device: /dev/dvd
i changed the device in the mplayer c

The apm.c looks ok to me... So here is the kernel segment of my kernel, which
includes the apm feature.

but doesn't power off. What can I do? (who ever knows the notebook knows, how
damn stupid the power button must be pushed
