i must buy a new notebook to replace my declining inspiron 3800. as it is unplanned, i must be a bit budget-minded, but i still need some power features. i don't need a desktop replacement, but i also don't need ultra-portable. inspiron 5150's, hp pavilions, and ibm thinkpad r41's look sort of at

my gdm dies occasionally while i'm logged in. i'll log in, work a bit, logout, and x restarts, but gdm is gone, so it doesn't show the login. i have to kill x, then restart gdm to get it back. it's on a laptop, and i often suspend the machine, instead of shut it down, but i don't see much correl
