Simultaneous internal/external monitor on Dell Latitude CPx

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone was able to run both the LCD and an external monitor simultaneously on a Dell Latitude CPx. I am able to use one or the other, but not both. I'm told that this is handled by the X server, though this surprises me. I've never had to do any modification of XF86Con
