perhaps mode 'msdos'. select 'bsd'
select mode bootable with the partition manager.

The shutdown command someone previously suggested should have been (as
root):
shutdown -hP now
The P option is for power off. This command works on my desktop.

You're probably making bzImages, meaning your kernel is a compressed
image. See if you can uncompress them both and then compare their
sizes.
Failing that, you'd have to compare your .configs if you're really
interested in tracking down the cause of this :)

kernel on the new system. What will actually run on the system when in production is
completely up to your choice.
