May not be the solution, but check your sources.list.

root via sudo. So, you can do:
sudo synaptic
At the command prompt. And you will then be asked for *your* password.

I would recommend trying Knoppix, Mepis or some other bootable Debian based
distro so that you can see how it looks befor
