Init not found while trying to install

Hi all. Im trying to install debian sarge r2 in my laptop, IBM Thinkpad 600 I want to make the install useing the 2.6 kernel, so at boot time, I type linux26, and the installation starts for a few seconds till I get a kernel panic, init not fount How can I solve this? Thanks in advance __
