I see this before, after update hotplug I get the same error, and
after udev update (overwrite hotplug) all works again.

After upgrading from version 8.24.8 to 8.28.8-0.1 in sid on a Thinkpad T43, I
observed this strange behaviour. Kernel is 2.6.17-2-686.
$ glxgears -printfps
1127 frames in 5.0 seconds = 225.244 FPS
1120 frames in 5.0 seconds = 223.986 FPS
1112 frames in 5.0 seconds = 222.386 FPS
