c'est pour cela que je me tourne vers vous.
J'ai un portable TOSHIBA 2450 sur lequel je fais tourné un noyau 2.6.14
à la sauce débian ( et ca marche pas mal ...) et j ai installé une carte
wireless Orinoco Gold 801

You could try to disable hotplug.
I known it is possible but I don't know how (I think you can add an
option in lilo or grub, or somehow preventing it from starting at boot
during the installation).
Or if you don't manage to disable it you could try to reinstall your
system without installing hotp
