Weird. I have an A40 with, AFAICT, the same chipset.
Just install alsa-base and it should work.
Don't forget to turn up the volume though.

Works like a charm for me (sony vaio) with the following kernel

I just got my hands into a Toshiba Satellite A35-S1592.
The first thing done was remove Win XP and installing Debian Sarge :)
Almost everything went fine with the instalation my only problem is the
soundcard.
I can`t get is working...
Here is the lspci output for the soundcard.
Any clues??
