at a guess, try popping a card in the reader, and do dmesg...
on knoppix 3.6...
my Sony usb drive, and the Memory Stick reader (for a camera)
show up as /dev/sda, and I just mount them (type msdos)
mount -t msdos /dev/sda1 /media/thingum
on knoppix 3.7... the usb drive shows up as /dev/uba ins

Did you enable all the sound hardware with the DOS utility PS2.E
I have alsa running on my Thinkpad 600E. Note that I am running kernel
version 2.6.8.1 -- if you are running 2.4.x, these may not be exactly
correct, but will be similar. Any 2.6.x series kernels will be very
similar. Also note that I have been having trouble with sound on any
kernel more recent
