I checked the smart stuff several times. I got the impression that my
problem is maybe too mechanical, and smart does not even notice it.
Right now I am doing a complete backup, then I will try the long test,
which I have not tried yet.

Is your drive configured as master? If you don't set as master (it's
just a jumper),
