As you describe the problem as urgent, I shall try to help as much as I can.
Please try to eject and insert your network card a few times, and see if
`dmesg' reports the some sort of hotplug event. If that is the case, your
pcmcia daemon is running.

I don't really know about your nic..Is an integrated one? Which kernel
are you running?
But the sound should work if you add your normal user to /etc/group .
