You may try framebuffer (details see FrameBuffer-HOWTO at
http://www.tldp.org), also have a look into the BIOS, especially the
Toshiba
I had the same problem on a more recent (HP) machine, until a BIOS upgrade
fixed it.
Maybe check for a new Bios?
