your comments helped me to get sound working on my laptop and on my
desktop. On the desktop everything works fine, but I disabled it on my
lapto, because the sound is a bit messed up and more importantly since I

On my Compaq laptop, running woody-stable I am having since a couple of
days the following problem: when I put a CD in the drive's tray, either
a data or a music CD, the disc is not recognized, and I have the
following message in /var/log/messages:
