I think there is a more (maybe the most) minimalistic windowmanager called
'lwm' (light window manager) - but maybe too minimalistic.

thinkpad. Currently running woody with kernel 2.4.16. I compiled the
kernel with the Prsim drivers as modules. hermes.o, orinoco.o and
orinoco_cs.o appear in /lib/modules.../wireless. pcmcia-cs is installed

You need to upgrade to the pcmcia-cs packages in sid, the ones in woody and
potato will NOT compile under later 2.4 kernels. I believe any version above
.27 will work correctly. Give that a shot.

controller, not the 1445, but its working fine.
I don't use the pcmcia-cs package to control these interfaces, I use
the kernel pcmcia support. Using a 3Com Cardbus adapter I utilise the
3c59x kernel driver, not the driver in the pcmc

I currently use blackbox, and previously have used windowmaker - I'm not
entirely sure which one will perform best on a low end system, but both
