time in Linux Mint 9 without any problems, but about a month ago, I
switched to Ubuntu Studio 12.4 beta, and started to experience random
lockups/poweroffs.

Actually it's a bit weird, I don't know what this is. Was just "surfing
the web" and switching between the browser and a terminal. No 3D at all
involved. Now I'm working since 30 minutes, and the problem didn't occur
again...
