I re-installed grub-pc and grub2 using the following commands: apt-get install --reinstall grub2 apt-get install --reinstall grub-pc. This did not help. I then purged the following packages and answered yes to the debconf prompt about removing /boot/grub and reinstalled them: apt-get autoremove
