Similar symptoms (system becomes unresponsive) but different circumstances - when unpacking linux-headers-2.6.26-1-686 package. The error occurred twice on my machine during exactly the same operation. Both times a reboot was necessary to get machine back to normal. # uname -a Linux m 2.6.26-1-
