I'm going to apologize upfront for taking a bit of a
tangent from the initial direction of this report. I
have seen similar symptoms, but there's no sign of
similar issues in the linux-source-2.6.12 bug reports.

Severity: important
There seems to be a serious bug (might be related to pmu) in 2.6.12.
Reports in debian-powerpc mailing list mention that the problem did not exist
in previous versions of the kernel (2.6.8/2.6.9) but it is present in 2.6.
