writers, etc. I don't have any experience with your hardware,
but using sg to access your root disk is pretty unusual.
Have you tried the sata_sil driver?

An SATA workstation requires sg.ko to boot properly. I had to roll our
own initrd, but it'd be nice if the standard deb came with an initrd
