I have a Radeon 9600XT (just installed yesterday) and also observe
this problem upon loading radeonfb. (Note to original submitter:
adding the line
skip="radeonfb"
to /etc/discover-modprobe.conf works around this problem at the
possible expense of some X server performance.)
