The problem seems to have gone away when I upgraded to a newer kernel:
inux-image-2.6.29-1-686 2.6.29-2
inux-image-2.6.29-1-686 2.6.29-3
(two different machines, varying mixes of stable and testing+unstable
packages).

Apparently I've upgraded several packages before the Christmas break,
and from early this year my system started freezing and spontaneously
rebooting. No logs to be found.
I'm also not certain which package is the culprit ...
