The problem broke the entire system overnight before I could get an
outage window in which to reboot. Besides the afpd and smbd processes
previously reported, cfagent processes had also begun to hang in 'D',
and while I didn't notice them in 'D' state along with the several
hundred other stuck proc
have the same file open the last time this problem
happened. I can 'cat' the file just fine.
I will proceed to try the kernel from squeeze-backports the next time I
can reboot this server.

Unmounting and re-mounting NFS mounts did not solve the problem, as rpciod
is still stuck in 'D' and stuck smbd processes are still spawning with the
same files open as before.

After upgrading to 2.6.39-1-686-pae I have fewer boot attempts hanging.
Usually one or two before a successful boot.
It appears that if I downgrade udev one version (udev_169-1)
I get better results (at least with today set of packages).

heavy (bittorrent) these messages start to flood the kernel log.

If you turn off KMS the old framebuffer driver works fine
obviously, this means 2.6.34 and beyond are unusable at this point in time on
the i830
although I did get the blacklight on in the terminal using 2.6.35 with KMS on
My Toshiba 1200-S212 "i830" only has 8 megs
2.6.35-rc5-686 is loading without any errors.
at least without any errors that I can find...
