It to me is very clear now the issue is related to SATA i/o.
Both my harddrive and dvd drive are on a ICH8 southbridge. The JMB361 on
the motherboard remains unused because of severe problems. Either (driver)
seems to blame.
The system continues to hang upon a windows installation in a vmwar
known
to be troublesome. The freezes are less frequent now than with these kernels,
but I
have to note I switched from a PATA to SATA dvd-ram drive to circumvent the
JMB361
controller on my MSI P965 Neo F motherboard even the windows drivers for the
JMB chip
are buggy.

The problem persists. The kernel reports:
