I cannot reproduce the problem anymore - it seems that upgrading to kernel
2.6.32-5 fixed it.

in /etc/hosts.allow? It looks like
rpcbind needs that.
hosts.allow was originally empty, as was hosts.deny
I tried adding this to hosts.allow but it did not help:
ALL: localhost
ALL: 127.0.0.1
