With 4.9.0-6-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.88-1+deb9u1 (2018-05-07), the problem
disappeared from
two different laptops that where affected.
Seems like it is fixed.

I experience the same problem (and got around it by reverting to
linux-image-4.9.0-5-amd64).
In my case, the problem does not prevent gdm3 to start: it just take a vry
looong time (around 5 min).
I reproduced it on a freshly installed (with Debian 9.4) computer.

My mouse's (MS Intelimouse, PS/2 with a wheel) wheel stopped working since the

airo driver hang with 2.6.24-6 on a PIII.
It seems it it because it need aes crypto.
It will first try to load padlock-aes, but it fails to load
Then it load geode_aes which load, and airo hang (airo seems to use
geode_ae
new kernel in your /boot/grub/menu.lst
(I just changed the root=hda1 into root=sda1 in mine and it works, I didn't
change the 'root(hd0,0)' line).
I have not changed the cdrom device as it is said on the forum, and I have
no problem using it.

I do not use RAID, have no SATA support, I just have an ATA HDD and an IDE

udev cause some serious problems on some configuration and make the
system unstable.
I believe the default behaviour should be to use yaird and let's the
user switch to udev with initramfs-tools only if it wants.
