I just tried to unplug my CDROM drive on a Dell Latitude D600 laptop and
run 'hdparm -U 1 /dev/hdc' to unregister it from the kernel.
It seamed to work in that the kernel does not know about hdc any more,

with 2.6.17-1, my laptop (Dell Latitude D600) does not correctly come
back out of suspend to memory any more. It works with 2.6.16-2.
