It turns out that in the new version I have to use backslashes instead of
forward slashes in the kernel command line.
e. g. "initrd=\EFI\EFISTUB\INITRD.IMG" instead of
"initrd=/EFI/EFISTUB/INITRD.IMG"

That kernel has dropped to the experimental repo a few hours ago, so I
installed it, regenerated the initrd, and copied them to the ESP, and added an
entry for it.

For some reason, from 4.19.0 onward, the kernel refuses to load the AMD
modules. The screen defaults to 80*25 text mode and "startx" does not work.
