after trying new RAM and different swap partitions on different disks, i installed kernel 2.6.15 from backports.org. the machine has now been up for 8 days with no problems. this suggests to me that there is a problem in Debian's stable 2.6 kernel which has been fixed between 2.6.8-3 and 2.6.15.
