Another user submitted the same bug (358913) [1] as me (359207) [2]
I wasn't sure about the severity level : he used "normal" and I used
"important". Perhaps it should be "normal" for both?
I think the two bug reports should be merged (with same severity).
As I dont know how I could do this, cou

I forgot an important URL in my bug report : it's where I found the solution
to my problem. Here it is.

If I use the standard unstable kernel packages (linux-image-2.6.{15,16}-1-686),
I can't use my USB key. There are messages in syslog like the line below, then
a bunch of "Buffer I/O error on device sda1".

I rebuild a custom kernel, mainly disabling CONFIG_ACORN_PARTITION_CU
I've got a problem (Debian unstable) with linux kernel packages
linux-image-2.6.{15,16}-1-686 : I can't use my USB key.
In the syslog, I found this
SCSI device sda: 2007040 512-byte hdwr sectors (1028 MB)
sda: Write Protect is off

Yes, I didnt change any BIOS settings since 2003.
I checked them, of course, but they were correct.
The error message was irrelevant. The real problem was that the
ICH4 Intel chipset appeared to late
I dont know what exactly was the problem, but it is now fixed for me.
Anyway, thanks to the magic voodoo that helped me :-)
Here are the relevant commands I used between reboots.
vim /etc/modules # added piix near the top
depmod -a
aptitude install yaird
depmod -a
dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-2
Same problem here with linux-image 2.6.15-6. Performance is quite horrible
without my usual UDMA ide settings. Launching bonnie++ means a 10.0+ load !
