However, on my Gentoo system, I can run tcpdump just fine even with a
self-compiled 64-bit kernel and 32-bit userspace

I have not tried 2.6.29 yet, but in my self-compiled 2.6.27.6 (built

A user of LFS LiveCD reported a similar problem in the past. We were able to
solve this by adding the following lines to /etc/modprobe.conf:
options iwl3945 disable_hw_scan=1
options iwl4965 disable_hw_scan=1

firewire stack, you removed such freedom. Please include both stacks and
add the relevant blacklist files. I don't care what is the default as
long as I can choose the stack that works for me.
