I compiled both versions as per your instructions, and the behaviour is the
same each time.
I need to use setpci ... to get the screen backlight on.
Do you need any additional information?

Just reflecting on this. I was following Debian testing, and installing the
kernels as they came through. The last one that worked for me was
linux-image-2.6.32-5-686

Additional info: the screen needs to be turned on again after lid closure
or screensaver timeout.
It seems to be achieved by creating a file called
/etc/acpi/local/lid.sh.post with the following contents

I revisited this problem tonight, and it seems related to the
xserver-xorg-video-intel package.
In desperation, I uninstalled it.
# uname -a
Linux alanz-laptop 3.1.0-1-686-pae #1 SMP Mon Nov 14 08:24:20 UTC 2011 i686
GNU/Linux
It now boots without problems.
The video seems fine, I get
