I just wanted to confirm that the error disappeared after switching to a
new network card that is also based on the igb driver.
The affected motherboard is a ASUS PRIME X299-DELUXE. [1]

we are using several cifs mounts, among them our users' homes, and this
regression causes graphical logins to fail, because
~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log
could no longer be moved to
~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log.ol
