I have the same problem, i have notebook samsung np530, and the fix was
change kernel's version from 3.2 to 3.5
There are a "apt-get install " for it!!
after i change to kernel
quantal
the problem doesn't appear any more!!!

I tried a newer kernel 3.8-1-686-pae, but no luck.
Seems to be the same as 3.2.0-4-686-paefor modeset 0 and 1.
Here is modeset=1 information, probe fails in dmesg log.
