Trying to install Debian with installer images generated with a newer

Right, this package only has firmware for some very old tg3 chips.
Most likely this is a bug in the driver, or

Are you using a crossed ethernet cable? Don't do that. All GBit
interfaces have to do that on its own.

Two Dell PowerEdge R620 connected via crosslink using the onboard NICs
(obviously a BCM5720 which is specifically produced for Dell and called
BCM95720 then) don't negotiate to 1000baseT/Full, but only to 100baseT/Full.

The original bug
I discovered the triggering reason for the kernel Oops. I can reproduce
it like this:
- take a 3TB disk, put it into an old USB dock, which does not
understand 3TB disks, and observe how Linux reports (in
/proc/partitions) a disk size of about 800GB
- put the 3TB disk into a modern USB dock,
Today I have upgraded the kernel, now it is linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64
(3.2.39-2).
I think we have to reopen the bug, because it seems that the bug is not
solved but just suppressed the warning messages.
It is not just my thoughts; everyone can make sure executing couple of
command.
