Linux 2.6.38.4 appears to include some ABI changes so we may need to
bump the ABI number.

I have got the same problem since upgrading to
linux-image-2.6.38-2-amd64
the console is turning black, no tty's seem to be running (or I can't
access them) and gdm doesn't start.
I can still reboot by pressing ctr+alt+del and console shows back up
showing normal shutdown messages.
