I tried compiling the kernel with scsi and eata built-in and suffered
the same problem.
Error messages I saw included:

it seems that using iscsitarget with fileio on a file in /dev/shm causes
the kernel to crash.
it seems that it is not debian-specific but i didn't find where to
submit bugreports on iscsitarget's website.
as a kernel team you may forwrard this mail to the right persons.
