I just checked it on the SPARC machine, with the following result:

I also tried linux-image-2.6.22-2-iop32x 2.6.22-4 from unstable. I get
the same error, though the message is slightly more verbose:

The newer 2.6.23-rc9 kernel shows the same behaviour. So i build a
2.6.22.9 kernel with the sources from www.kernel.org to reproduce the
problem and reported this bug to bugzilla.kernel.org. The bug number is
9119 (http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9119).

root=UUID=... whereas it works fine using root=/dev/... syntax.
No use of mdadm, lvm2,... (though the tools are installed), but
