I compiled and run 2.6.16.13 vanilla kernel on Sarge and this problem
has too! snd_cs4281 was succesfuly detected at least in one case, but
I can't tell why.
My notebook is a little outdated Fujitsu-Siemens C-6155.
I tried to exclude ACPI support from kernel, but without affect on
snd_cs4281 no
I tried the usb again, and the crash came back but this
time reset-nvram won't clear it.
For now, I am going to assume there is just something flaky
about this box, since the other xserves behave themselves.
But I don't want to risk using the usb ports on the other xserves

Problem appears to be nvram corruption. Reset nvram from Open Firmware
