Problem appears to be nvram corruption. Reset nvram from Open Firmware reset-nvram set-defaults reset-all (same procedure commonly used to 'repair' failing firewire and usb ports). Subsequent attempt to boot 5/3/06 daily image made it to the 'Trying to im_free...' hang from bug Bug#36584
