Does manually restarting kwin resolve the issue (execute `kwin
--replace` in Konsole or KRunner)? If not, does running that command
in Konsole show errors?
You may also want to check if you fully upgraded everything. Does `apt
upgrade` mention packages that were held back?

No, it was not installed.
I installed it and checked. Now I have previews of PDF files, but the
number of thumbnail.so processes skyrocket as before, both in
directories with a few and in directories with thousands of PDF files,
