invisible mouse cursor on laptop

As if the laptop mouse wern't difficult enough to manipulate! Is there any way to configure the mouse cursor to be properly visible on a laptop screen when in I-bar form (as in kmail composer window, shell window etc.)? The faint grey I is all but invisible. TIA -- richard
