Hi well i am wondering what is the process to upgrade to kde 3.1 since i
did an apt-get upgrade and it messed up my qt packages and now everything
in kde 3.0.4 crashes. Please help! thanks.

I logged in from the console and shutdown kdm, then did...

as expected KDE just sat there and then died. The log file though produced

According to some advice I got, there should be a file ru_yawerty in
/etc/X11/xkb/symbols, which apparently is for a Russian phonetic
keyboard. However, in my installation of Debian 3.0, KDE 2, there is no
such file. So, I found the file on the internet, and copied it over to
this directory.

Glad it helped. I don't no why these things happen but I have used the
same strategy as you and found it worked for me also.
KDM must be able to log debugging information. It should be available in
the KDM configuration file, but I haven't checked at all.
