I've been experiencing this too, compiling kde 3.0.0 and 3.0.1 from scratch on woody (and I believe it happened on gentoo). Oddly, it's only happening at 75dpi for me, always works at 100dpi, more bizzarely works for a bit then magically stops at some point at any other arbitrary resolution. Howev
