In the debs from http://kde.ping.uio.no/ppc /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc has Setup=/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xsetup it should have Setup=/etc/kde3/kdm/Xsetup which does important things like setting the background image (plus making my keyboard work, which relies on /etc/X11/Xmodmap). Well done for a
