Simple, but this worked for me:
- startup the kde mixer "kmix"
- check which output devices are activated (master, pcm, ..)

Hi,
you need to ensure that aRts is properly installed on
your system. Without aRts no sound. Any sound related
problem should be fixed by checking aRts.
ALSA does not work on its own.

Do you have the alsa-utils package installed? I had a similar problem and
installing the alsa-utils package cleared it right up.
