Well, I have fixed my problem, but I don't understand exactly why I have. I decided that I really needed to get libfontcong regenerated. so I made a /usr/lib/fontconfigs and moved the /usr/lib/*fontc* there, so that I could move them back if I couldn't get things to biuld. And -- dpkg-reconfigure

s I have installed into a file someplace where I can make a script out of this. Any other suggestions as to how to find out what is going wrong here, or else, how to build a 'push here to fix everything' command that works regardless of how things got broken, warmly appreciated. thank you
