In fact my debian is a mix of sid/sarge/woody ; I probably broke
something. I tried to remove all kde package, and install the stables
from http://download.kde.org, but I have the same bug.
I can anyway start manually the kde session using 'kwrapper ksmserver'
from a failsafe session.

If you just want to have netscape use it, put this "export LD_PRELOAD..."
in the shellscript that starts netscape (typically /usr/X11R6/bin/netscape
just is a script).

Now I am using kde-2.2 beta, and the problem is solved. Note that this
tips can be used for any program that needs the root window.

(not sure of the filename) ; it
explains how to generate a script with apt-get using wget to download
all needed files. So you can use your dialup connection to 'apt-get
update', select what you need, generate the script, and use this script to
download at work. Good luck !
