I've got the xfonts-intl-japanese package installed.
I like Kochi Mincho And Kochi Gothic fonts (ttf-kochi-mincho &
ttf-kochi-gothic), and you can also search and install Bitstream Cyberbit.
This last one is unicode.

Maybe your monitor supports "1280x1024" instead? Mine does. At that resolution
and with a 64 pixels wide kicker a 1280x960 wallpaper fits perfectly. 8)
