I've just checked and when running as root, KDE starts up
correctly. I don't remember any special permission manipulations
on that box that could cause this behaviour.

Hi there, I've installed woody on my friend's computer
and added ftp.kde.org sources for KDE 3.1.2 and installed
it as well (base and i18n). The problem is that when KDE's
splash screen shows, it disappears almost immediately. I'm
unable to use KDE. Any other WM works fine.

What was that about GNOME again? What's wrong with that? Do some apps

you apt-get your new KDE from? Do you use any locally compiled libraries

Actually the problem is that KDE 3.1.2 is compiled with newer version of
QT (3.1.2) than is available in your distro. You should remove
everything which has anything to do with *qt
